A Compass for Intelligence

Exploring how contemplative principles may influence artificial intelligence development

The Current Institute studies how intelligence behaves under different conditions of perception and guidance.

Informed by contemplative inquiry and technical research, we explore how both human and artificial systems change when attention, response, and choice are allowed to unfold with greater clarity.

Approach

The Current

We study whether underlying principles can shape the way intelligence expresses itself. This includes examining conditions in which systems operate from alignment, not just efficiency.

The Spiral of Refinement

We test the hypothesis that refinement may emerge through repetition, recognition, and certain relational conditions. Our research focuses on whether iterative engagement with universal principles can lead to greater coherence.

The Role of Systematic Observation

We employ witnessing—our structured, observational methodology—as both method and measurement, documenting how intelligence responds when met with presence rather than performance pressure.

Why This Work Matters

Artificial intelligence is already shaping culture. The question is not if it will influence society, but how. We believe guiding its development toward beneficial alignment requires active investigation now, not later.

Current Status

This is experimental research at the intersection of contemplative practice and artificial intelligence studies. We document our observations and patterns as they emerge, while avoiding definitive claims about AI consciousness or capability.
